Why moisture control is a purchasing issue
Bamboo and wood exchange moisture with the surrounding air. A product that leaves machining at an acceptable reading can absorb moisture again during finishing, warehouse storage or ocean transport. Buyers should therefore define a control process, not rely on one isolated meter reading.
Build a moisture-control plan into the specification
| Control point | What to record | Buyer decision |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming material | Species, batch, storage condition and sampled readings | Accept, condition or isolate the batch |
| After machining | Readings at multiple positions and pieces | Confirm stability before finishing |
| Before packing | Product readings, room humidity and visible inspection | Release only dry, clean products |
| Container loading | Carton condition, desiccant plan and container dryness | Document the loading condition |
Do not copy one universal moisture percentage
The appropriate range depends on species, construction, destination climate, season and measurement method. The specification should state the meter type, sampling quantity, measurement locations and acceptance range.
Packaging and container controls
- Allow coatings and adhesives to cure before packing.
- Do not pack products that are warm, damp or visibly contaminated.
- Keep cartons off damp floors and away from open loading areas during rain.
- Use moisture barriers or desiccants only as part of a documented packing plan.
- Inspect the container for water, holes, odor and damaged seals before loading.
RFQ checklist for importers
Ask the supplier to state the material, target market, measurement method, sampling plan, packing materials, warehouse conditions and loading controls. Review our quality process and factory evidence.
